Every fall, spring, and summer semesters Invisible Histories offers graduate student internship opportunities for students interested in researching and learning more about Deep South LGBTQ+ history.

Applications for internships launch every year in the middle of the fall and spring semesters, and students who apply will be notified the week following the deadline to submit. In order to participate in an internship, we require that you are getting course credit, practicum credit, or have an official intern position through your institution.

Summer & Fall 2024 Invisible Histories Graduate Internship Opportunities

Invisible Histories is a 501(c)3 nonprofit located in Birmingham, AL, that locates, collects, preserves, researches and creates educational events around LGBTQ history in the Deep South. We are actively collecting in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and the Florida panhandle. Invisible Histories offers semester based internships for graduate students to earn course credit or practicum experience.

We will be reviewing applications the week following the deadline to submit, and we will notify candidates that week if they were selected for an interview. In order to participate in an internship, we require that you are getting course credit, practicum credit, or have an official intern position through your institution.

Summer 2024

Summer 2024 Internships

Queer History South Collections Safety Plan (virtual) – 1 position available
This position will help Invisible Histories review the feedback and materials generated by the Queer History South 2024 conference. Then create a resource guide and collections concerns and safety plan from these notes and additional resources.

Metadata & Description for 1990s Queer Videos (virtual) – 1 position available
This position will describe and create metadata for a series of digital videos of Gay Bar and fundraising activities centered in Charlotte, NC. This internship will consist of description of events, and creating metadata for tagging in Invisible Histories catalog.

Fall 2024

Research Internships

Newspaper Research, Southern Voice (virtual) – 1-2 positions available
Position will collect metadata about southern LGBTQ+ events, people, places from the 1988-1995 issues of the Southern Voice, an LGBTQ publication from Georgia. Position will work directly with Invisible Histories staff.

Deep South Queer Collections Survey (virtual) – 1-2 positions available
This position will research existing LGBTQ collections in Alabama and Georgia. This project will include researching collection names, existing finding aids, and item descriptions for LGBTQ southern materials in libraries, archives, and institutions in the Deep South. Library and Information Science students are preferred for this position.

Nationwide Queer Archival Collections Survey (virtual) – 1 position available
This position will research institutions and repositories across the US for queer southern history collections that exist outside of southern states. This project will include researching collection names, existing finding aids, and item descriptions for LGBTQ southern materials in libraries, archives, and institutions located outside of the Deep South. Library and Information Science students are preferred for this position.

Digital Internships

Archive-It Metadata & Description (virtual) – 1-2 positions available
This position will describe digital materials located on Invisible Histories Archive-It and Community Webs portals. Previous experience or training using metadata and digital humanities is preferred for this position. Position will work directly with Invisible Histories staff.

Social Media Internship

Social Media Internship (virtual) – 1 position available
This position will use digital materials and artifacts from Invisible Histories collection to create projects, posts, and digital exhibits on our social media. This position will work directly with Invisible Histories’s Director of Programming & Outreach, Margaret Lawson, to create engaging and fun ways to share this history. Digital humanities and public history students are highly encouraged to apply.

In-person Internship

Invisible Histories Collections Internship (in person, Birmingham, AL) – 1 position available
This internship position will work directly with Invisible Histories lead archivist at the IH office in Birmingham, Alabama to help transition our collections to a more full time system. This position will give the intern the opportunity to work with manuscript collections, ephemera, and textiles. Library and Information Science students are preferred for this position.

OutSmart Magazine (in-person, Birmingham, AL) – 1 position available
This position will need to be at the Invisible Histories office in Birmingham, Alabama, regularly in order to digitize and describe issues from the 1990s OutSmart Magazine out of Houston, TX. This is a partnership with the JD Doyle Archives.
